Kanye West’s new Yeezy clothing line has some people asking if the talented musician has lost his mind, while others think he is a sales genius. Who else can take clothing items similar to what you could find at an army surplus store and price them for $500, $1,000, or even over $3,000– and sell them out!
That is not to undersell his creativity when it comes to fashion, but the line was certainly interesting, to say the least, and brought out a few new takes on the post-apocalyptic zombie-hunter look. And with the height of discussions on a potentially dark future of America and Sci-Fi/Zombie movies on a never-ending rise in popularity, Kanye seems to have tapped into the vein of pop culture and delivered exactly what “we” wanted.
Of course, that all depends on who you are and what you value. While Kanye is a phenomenal rapper, songwriter, and record producer, there are many who criticize his fashion sense and for good reason. Take for example, the distinct difference between the male and female Yeezy clothing lines. The women’s clothing often looks goofy, or at the very least something that most women wouldn’t be caught dead wearing in public, while the men’s clothing line looks very cool and some people wouldn’t think it was that ridiculous to be wearing in public. This issue was more apparent with Yeezy season 1 than 2; he seemed to get more creative with women’s and men’s outfits in season 2. According to his wife, Kim Kardashian, “it’s gotten slightly better and more feminine, but she still would never wear his clothes given a choice.” In season 1, most women’s outfits were simply skin-colored underwear, either with or without a dark shirt – and that was about it.
On the other hand, you have the Adidas Yeezy Boost shoes, which quickly became wildly popular. The main reason behind this is that they actually have a unique look. No one has really seen a style like this before, unlike the Yeezy camouflage cotton jersey which looks like any other ordinary camouflage shirt. The boost shoes have a futuristic look with the thick soles and fastenings. They look like something a disturbed time-traveling warrior would wear, and they definitely make a fashion statement.
Whatever one’s opinion of the Yeezy clothing line, perhaps we can all agree it was a perfect supplement to his album The Life of Pablo. Both products portray a minimalist vibe and create the image of a war-torn dystopia. His products convey an idea that goes beyond just the quality of fabric – which could be the reason that people don’t mind paying so much more for them. The clothing gives one a connection to the mood and state of pop culture as opposed to simply buying high-end labels to look good.
So what do you think? Should Kanye just stick with music or is he a fashion genius? Do you think his oversized clothes are worth the money? We’d love to hear your thoughts – tell us in the comments below!
